Launch of unique youth broadband channel

Chew TV, the UK’s first broadband youth TV channel run by young people for young people has launched phase two of its unique site. Broadcasting an inspiring and diverse programme schedule combining existing footage and new commissions including video, animation and graphics Chew TV offers an innovative new route for young people to communicate their ideas with their peers and media professionals. Twofour is working with a number of agencies across the region including The Arts Council, South West Screen, Cornwall Film and Creative Partnerships to support the talented team of young people who are driving both the content and the programme schedule.

The new website design will enable viewers to upload content; all submissions will be considered by the commissioning team but will not necessarily appear on the site. This is the major difference with other UGC/ social networking sites where any content, no matter what the standard can be uploaded and made instantly available. Chew TV ensures every piece is looked at for quality of content and production and for its relevance to the target audience. If successful it will be placed it the programme schedule, and also be available through a search facility. Visitors are encouraged to set up a user registration and user profile to have the ability to upload their own content, leave reviews and rate work.

Chew TV is also operating many projects to involve young people in the site. These include, a Podcast series, involving students working with professional scriptwriters to produce a series of spoof radio. Also in production is the creation of a weekly news programme created entirely by young people. This programme will present the ‘News’ through young people aged between 15-18 years old and will challenge how stories are reported in the mainstream news by relating current issues to how they affect young people. Chew TV is also in the process of working with students and award winning photographer Dave Peak to produce a documentary to support the campaign to stop dumping at a Cornish beauty spot. Other young people who are benefiting from Chew TV’s digital media projects, include students who are being teamed up with professional animators to create content for the channel.
